horseback riding

Posted by: bonoboi on: August 22, 2009

went horseback riding with casey (for the second time).  both times we went up payson canyon.  this time we went a little further up payson canyon to a trail that starts at Jone’s Ranch (i think that’s what it was).  i used a new gps app on my iPhone to track our trail.  we went 5 miles and it was beautiful:  http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=320831. Janise, Lauri, Casey and I went.  we had lots of fun.  we ran with the horses a couple of times.  my horse (dodger) was the biggest.  casey says he’s also pretty head-strong- he goes where he wants when he wants.  he obeyed me 99% of the time.  on our first ride with casey he took off running after jan and casey started running.  but mine didn’t follow the trail- he went off on the side and we made our own trail!  it’s pretty dangerous because you can hit a gopher hole and your “done” (e.g. christopher reeves).   scarier, though is how my horse wandered off the trail and then was heading for a big 2 meter x 2 meter hole in the prairie.  i was scared.  somehow we missed it- but just barely.  now the second ride we did (this last wednesday) the same thing kind of happened.  the other horses were running and mine wandered off the trail a bit.  ahead of us i saw a deep ravine (3′ deep, 3′ across aprox.).  it scared me as we came closer and closer.  as soon as we got to it dodge tripped- not enough for us to fall and roll over, but enough that my left foot fell out of the strap and my body weight was shifted heavily to the right.  i was now running with the biggest horse using one foot, and one strap.  i tried to get hiim to stop by pulling back on the reins and saying “whoa” over and over.  he finally stopped when he wanted to stop.  i was able to get my foot back in but it scared the bejezus out of me.   actually, i had been just as scared at the first incident with dodger the other time, as i was this time (now that i think of it).  so we came to a stop and janise had her left foot through her strap all the way!  that could have been just as bad as my situation!  if she would have fallen she would have been dragged by one leg until the horse stopped.  i think i was more scared for her than she was.  maybe i’m just kind of a worry-wart, i dunno.

i shouldn’t spend so much time on the scary parts of the ride b/c the vast majority of it was fun..  it was relaxing, beautiful, and nice and cool in the summer weather (we had plenity of shade).  on our first ride we saw hundreds of elk (over 300 at least!).  beautiful site.  beautiful rides.  we’re so grateful casey’s taken us out twice.  it’s been very memorable!

saturday:  today gabby and i dropped janise off at Marnie’s in Provo to nanny.  we had to kill some time while she worked so we went bike shopping at a bunch of didfferent shops in the valley.  it was so hot!  we stopped at target and bought some veggies and marshmallows for us to make when we go camping.  gabby started 3rd grade and is loving it.  she’s in mrs. warwood’s class.  gabby’s an over-achiever- she is lisa from the simpsons.  she told me this week she wants to be a nerd b/c then one day when she’s grown up she will make lots of money.  lol that’s actually the right mentality to have to be successful in college.  and she’s very sociable so she’ll be a well-rounded and well-liked “nerd”, for sure.

she just had her baptism (tuesday).  we had lots of people over and ate hot dogs, chips and janise’s layered cake.  she said, “i felt good.  i think i might have felt the holy ghost”.  (s-f p?)

3 March 2009

Today I went to school. We won the contest for who read the most in 2nd grade. That means we get a Jazz player to our school. Last year the Jazz player couldn’t read that good. This year he was good. His name was Brezzer. Then w e made lambs and lions out of paper. It was because our teacher wanted to make them. At school I like to play with Taylor and olivia. We play “boys chasing us”. Mostly the girls win ‘cause we are fast.

Hip hop class:

I like hip hop because it is fun to dance now I am one of the good ones. I love to dance. You should love to dance it is fun! I can do the worm. There are girls there who have been taking the class 2 years and still can’t do the worm. Teacher asks me to show them how to do the worm. I can do other dances too.

The Living Aquarium, SLC: I touched a stingray. You don’t want to touch a sting ray. It’s gross! I will teach you how it feels. When u touch it it feels hard and really really slimy. You don’t want to touch it. Anyway, I had lots of fun! I saw sharks, exapus [octopus], starfish, and a lot of fish. After we went to Braza Grill to eat Brazilian BBQ. And always when the meat came, I was the only one who always ate it. I ate more than the grown-ups!

Night at the Living Museum, Lehi: I saw a guy- really big! [he was 7’4”] He had the costume of a tree. And he said a funny joke. I’ll tell you: there was a guy that had a piece of wood he was working with. He was making a broom with it. And the tree guy came up and said, “hey, that’s my brother!” and the other guy said, “this can’t be your brother!” “my brother’s a tree!” haha. Even my dad laughed!

I also bought a fossil. A real one [it is of a flower from millions of years ago].

Park: today after school, I played in the park. I had lots of fun. I was supposed to come back for singing class but forgot and missed singing class today. I was sad.

Mariana (alikan’s house): on Sunday we went to eat at Alikan’s house in SLC. I met a new friend named Mariana. She is brazilian and speaks mostly Portugese. I saw two sugar gliders. They are cute. But smelly! You don’t want to smell them. But only if you smell their fur. They can climb all over you and it tickles! Yeah, but I didn’t know so I didn’t do it.

Before that I played with Angel’s nieces at Angel’s house in Orem. They speak Spanish and English. Mom and dad were helping Angel move to his new house. And that day we ate a lot of food [at Outback, in Orem]. I did a lot of stuff this week with my family!!

Autumn Equinox

Posted by: bonoboi on: September 23, 2008

well, just a few updates,  Gaby’s back and in second grade now.  val and lauri (jan’s parents) stayed with us for about a month before going to Hawaii to see gabriel at byu.  we’ll probably be moving from our apt. in a few weeks to a house in a few weeks.  here is gaby’s kindergarten and 1st grade school picture.  in a couple of weeks i’ll post her new one.

Missing Gaby!

Posted by: bonoboi on: July 13, 2008

You don’t have to fake the smile, Gaby.  we know that chain link might as well be maximum security for a 7 year old

…she’s been in brazil for the last couple of weeks and her captors (grandma and grandpa in brazil) have told us she’ll be there for another month and a half.  today she called saying she missed her mom and dad!  she cried even!  but it wasn’t always this way.  oh no; her captors had bribed her to come down south with promises of free candy, new toys, tennis and soccer lessons, and even her own horse (which she has named eragon).  so, yeah, she was pretty excited to get down there and see her grandparents (ie revel in her spoils), but today she was crying and missing mommy and daddy.  that made us feel good b/c we’ve been missing her sweet little voice and energy here at home.  her female captor actually even told us that a couple of days ago she had found a large picture of us (they are usually well hidden from the victim), and she kept kissing our picture and saying how she missed us.   soon, my dear, we’ll be together soon.

after shed tears and two days had passed since she found our picture, gaby was allowed to phone home briefly.  it was great to hear her voice and see how she is doing.  she’s learning how to ride her horse almost everyday and training hard with her soccer and tennis coaches.  i asked her when she was going to come home, “tomorrow?”, i asked…

“no, not for a lot of days”, she said sadly.  prisoners rarely know the exact date of their release, so i wasn’t expecting as much from my daughter, either.

“well we miss you so much, i wish you were here right now so i could give you a big bear hug”.  i asked her what her favorite thing to do in brazil was and she said horses, and soccer.  she even made a goal.  i asked her if anyone said “goooooooal!”  she said yes, her coach.

i continued with the child-ish questions:

“what food do you miss most from the U.S.”?

“mommy’s food”.

“what do you miss the most from our house?”

“my parents”.

“what toy do you miss the most from home?”

“my unicorn”… she paused, then reconsidering her answer she quickly said, “no wait, my tiger.  my white tiger.”

i told her that i couldn’t wait for her to come back home so that we could play tiger, and horsey and whatever else she likes.  she told me to not watch kung-fu panda until she gets home.  she’s already seen it and has carefully chosen which characters in the film we most closely represent in real life.  i think she’s selected me to be the panda bear.  i anxiously await the honor of fulfilling that role, as the three of us watch our film while eating buttered and popped maize from a bucket.

Philosophy Games

fascinating. revealing. these games will twist your brain and logic as you try to defend your own rational and morals. i was blown away at the moral inconsistencies i have when considering moral obligations closer to my own gene pool and community.

wow.

Daddy Daughter Date

Posted by: bonoboi on: February 18, 2008

gaby,

today i asked you out on a date with daddy. you said you wanted to stay home. i asked again. you sounded pretty decided. i explained that i don’t have many days off to be able to spend with my daughter. you obliged. you then put on your winter clothes and we headed out to the car.

first stop was…err…. where did we go again? oh yeah, that’s why you didn’t want to come at first. we went to the bookstore- barne’s & noble, i believe. i showed you the children’s section, decorated and painted with castles and dragons and loaded with colorful children’s books. i confidently asked you, “okay, wanna go back home now?” you quickly replied, “no, why? i want to stay here!” and with that you smiled and quickly ran to sit on the steps with a new book in your hands. i told you that at the end of the day you could pick any book there to take home with you.

at the end of the day you chose a book on wildcats, because you “love cheetahs and want to help save them from enstiction” when you get older. you taught me that “cheetahs die a lot because lions and tigers eat them and their babies”.

i hung out in the philosophy section, the science section and then spent 15 minutes looking at the cool leather-bound journals for sale. i thought it would be cool to pass a nice looking journal down to you one day, but opted to keep this blog since i can write 5 times as fast on a keyboard, instead of penning something down on paper.

by the time i was done, you had already “been done” for almost twenty minutes. you showed a lot of patience with me as i insisted on staying “just another minute” and to walk down “one more aisle”. seriously- thanks for the patience, young mature one.

you sounded hungry. no, it wasn’t the rumbling of your stomach that tipped me off, but the comment, “hey daddy are you hungry, cos i’m hungry”. i quickly deduced that you could go for some good food. close by was a great little place called SmokeHouse BBQ. i explained to you that it was the good kind of smoke, not the cigarrette smoke. you were relieved and told me how bad smoking is. we shared a pulled pork sandwich with beans- we didn’t like the beans so we exchanged the side item to some good ol’ fashioned maccaroni and cheese. Mmmmm.

you were hungry- you ate the whole sandwich! it’s okay, i wasn’t hungry at all. we then went to University Mall to see if the kid’s play tree was open yet. it wasn’t. daddy spent an hour looking at clearanc dress shirts and bought a few. you entertained yourself by hiding in between the shirt racks and scaring me.

over and over.

but yeah, i was scared. you’re fun to play with. i had a great day with you. when we left the mall it was dark. you didn’t complain once. i thanked you and you also said you had fun. when we got home you put in a movie in your room and that was the end of our date.

we’ll have to do this again sometime. thanks for the company.
